QCIF: Introduction to the Unix Shell

Introduction to the Unix Shell

Description

The Unix shell has been around longer than most of its users have been alive. It has survived so long because it’s a power tool that allows people to do complex things with just a few keystrokes. More importantly, it helps them combine existing programs in new ways and automate repetitive tasks so they aren’t typing the same things over and over again. Use of the shell is fundamental to using a wide range of other powerful tools and computing resources (including “high-performance computing” supercomputers). These lessons will start you on a path towards using these resources effectively.

This workshop will take place over two consecutive mornings, Tuesday 24th March and Wednesday 25th March, 2026 from 9:00am to 1:00pm AEST each day. Please only register if you are able to fully commit to attending both mornings.

No specific experience is required beyond a willingness to be challenged with new ways of interacting with computers.

Any researcher seeking an introduction to Unix to begin automating processes, to use command line research software, or to access HPC resources.

You can email training@qcif.edu.au.

Cancellations are accepted up to three working days before the start of the workshop. If you do not join on the day without having cancelled beforehand, you may be blocked from attending any future QCIF training workshops.
