Using AI Effectively and Ethically in Learning: Preparing Students for the Real World

The rapid adoption of generative AI tools is transforming how students learn, solve problems, and engage with knowledge. While these tools offer significant opportunities, they also introduce challenges related to over-reliance, superficial understanding, and academic integrity. This session explores practical approaches to integrating AI into learning and assessment in a way that supports skill development, critical thinking, and responsible use. Drawing on teaching experience at the University of Queensland and the University of the Sunshine Coast, it highlights strategies that help students engage with AI as a learning partner rather than a shortcut. The talk will also discuss the broader implications of AI for future careers, emphasising the importance of developing adaptive, reflective, and ethically grounded approaches to working with AI in academic and professional contexts.

Artificial Intelligence for Personalized Diagnosis and Management in Fibromyalgia

This work explores the potential of AI to support earlier diagnosis and personalized management of fibromyalgia by integrating patient-reported data, wearable signals, and clinical information. The project focuses on making complex and heterogeneous condition patterns more visible and interpretable using explainable AI approaches.
It aims to support clinicians and empower patients through improved understanding, symptom tracking, and prediction of flare-ups, contributing to more effective and patient-centred care.

Bio

Dr Hanem Ellethy is an AI researcher, engineer, and educator whose work sits at the intersection of machine learning, clinical medicine, and responsible technology practice. She completed her PhD in Artificial Intelligence  at The University of Queensland in 2024, developing deep learning systems for diagnosing mild traumatic brain injury from CT imaging data. She currently coordinates the Practical Machine Learning course at the University of the Sunshine Coast and holds a Casual Academic appointment at UQ, teaching across AI, data science, and computing.

Hanem’s research spans medical imaging AI for clinical decision support, AI reliability in real-world deployment, and patient-centred AI for complex chronic conditions, including a developing project on AI-assisted diagnosis and management of fibromyalgia. Alongside her research, she is Co-founder and CTO of ScanAI, an AI medical imaging startup working to translate research into clinical tools. Her work has been published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology, Computers in Biology and Medicine, and Scientific Reports, and she serves as Guest Editor of a Diagnostics (MDPI) Special Issue on AI in clinical diagnostics.

Her teaching philosophy,  which she calls a Pedagogy of Care,  is grounded in her journey across three countries and her commitment to making STEM genuinely accessible to diverse learners.

Dr Ellethy is committed to making AI genuinely useful at the bedside and genuinely accessible in the classroom.

Mentor

I am interested in contributing as a mentor to support students and early-career researchers, particularly in areas related to AI, data science, and emerging technologies in education and healthcare. I bring experience in teaching, curriculum design, and integrating AI into learning, and would be keen to support students in developing both technical skills and responsible approaches to AI use.

I would also be open to contributing to discussions or initiatives at the intersection of AI, education, and healthcare, particularly around responsible AI use and student engagement in AI-augmented learning environments.
