Data are a pre-requisite but bioinformatics enables scientific discovery

The proliferation of technologies brings biological data at ever-greater scale and resolution. To gain accurate insights, we analyse resulting data sets in combination, and by incorporating biological expertise often gained from collaborators. I will exemplify some of the work we do, which is centred on developing new methods to enable scientific discovery from emerging data, when scarce or plentiful, to explain insights with both medical and industrial applications.

Mikael has a PhD in Computer Science and AI from the University of Exeter (UK) but has spent most of his career in biological research environments, including the Institute for Molecular Bioscience/ARC Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics and the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, at the University of Queensland, Australia, where he is currently a Bioinformatics group leader and professor. He collaborates with researchers in neuroscience, developmental biology, protein engineering and bioeconomy to mention but a few, and contributes with expertise in the processing, analysis and integration of emerging types of biological data as well as discovery-based method development.
