From Bioinformatics to Industry ML: What Transfers, What Changes

In this short talk, I’ll share how I moved from bioinformatics into an industry Data Scientist / ML Engineer role at Truckit.net, where I apply machine learning to a freight marketplace.

My transition was driven by a realisation that the part of bioinformatics I enjoyed most was the computational challenge: using data, statistics, and domain knowledge to build methods that solve difficult problems. I’ll discuss what transferred well from research, including scientific rigour, reproducible workflows, and explaining technical work clearly to people with different backgrounds.

I’ll also share what changed in industry, especially the engineering needed to make models production-ready, and offer practical advice for students thinking about a similar move.
